My niece
Hiranmayee completed B.E. Computer Science and went to pursue Masters at
Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. When she landed at the O Hare
airport, the immigration officer asked her which school she was going to. She
replied that she was going to Illinois Institute of Technology in South
Chicago. The officer warned, “You should never walk around the neighbourhood
alone by yourself.”
When she
went to the college, Police Authorities met with the students as part of the
Orientation program and told them to always be careful. As the University was
located near a project area where African American population was concentrated,
students were advised to not wander into their area. When confronted by them,
the Police Authorities advised students to give up what they asked for and to
not convert property damage into personal damage.
One day
while returning from her class Hiranmayee lost her way and walked right into
the project housing area. She had walked several feet inside before she
realized that she had headed the wrong way. Her heart leapt to her mouth. There
were group of African American people looking inquisitively at the unwelcome
stranger. My niece froze in fear. She started to mentally repeat “Sri Guro
Paahimaam.” Suddenly an African American approached her rapidly and asked her
where she was going. She replied she was going to the student housing in the
University campus but had lost her way. He asked her to follow him and lead her
back to University campus.
The next day
she related this to her professors who listened in disbelief. In all their
years in the University they had not heard of an incident where those African
Americans had actually helped others.

విమానాశ్రయంలో (O Hare airport) దిగినప్పుడు, ఇమ్మిగ్రేషన్
అధికారి ఆమెను ఏ విద్యా సంస్థ కు
వెళుతున్నారని అడిగారు. దక్షిణ చికాగోలోని ఇల్లినాయిస్ ఇనిస్టిట్యూట్ ఆఫ్
టెక్నాలజీకి వెళుతున్నానని ఆమె సమాధానం ఇచ్చింది.
"అక్కడ మీరు ఎప్పుడూ ఒంటరిగా తిరగకూడదు."... అని
ఆ అధికారి హెచ్చరించాడు, ఆమె కళాశాలకు
వెళ్ళినప్పుడు కూడా, పోలీసు అధికారులు ఓరియంటేషన్ కార్యక్రమంలో భాగంగా
విద్యార్థులను కలుసుకొని, ఎల్లప్పుడూ జాగ్రత్తగా ఉండాలని చెప్పారు.
ఆఫ్రికన్ అమెరికన్లు ఎక్కువగా
ఉన్న ఒక ప్రాజెక్ట్ ప్రాంతానికి సమీపంలో ఆ విశ్వవిద్యాలయం ఉన్నందున, ఆ ప్రాంతాలలో తిరగకూడదని విద్యార్థులకు పోలీసు
అధికారులు సలహా ఇచ్చినారు. ఒకవేళ అటువంటి పరిస్థితులు ఎదురైనప్పుడు వారు ఏది
అడిగితే అది ఇచ్చేసి తప్పించుకోవాలని,
ఆస్తి నష్టాన్ని వ్యక్తిగత నష్టంగా మార్చుకోవద్దని విద్యార్థులకు అధికారులు
సూచించారు.
ఒక రోజు తన తరగతి నుండి తిరిగి వచ్చేటప్పుడు హిరణ్మయి తాను దారి తప్పి ప్రాజెక్ట్ హౌసింగ్
ప్రాంతంలోకి నడిచారు. ఆమె దారి తప్పి
తప్పు మార్గంలోకి నడుస్తున్నాను అని
గ్రహించేలోపే ఆమె చాలా దూరం లోపలికి నడిచేసింది. ఒక్కసారిగా ఆమె గుండె జారిపోయినది
భయంతో. అక్కడ ఒక ఆఫ్రికన్ అమెరికన్ ప్రజల గుంపు ఆమె పై ఆరా తీస్తూ వుండడం కనిపించింది. నా మేనకోడలు
భయంతో స్తంబించి పోయినది.
ఏ మాత్రం ఆలస్యం చేయకుండా ఆమె వెంటనే "శ్రీ గురో
పాహిమాం” అని అంటూ మనస్సులో స్మరించడం
ప్రారంభించింది. ఇంతలో అకస్మాత్తుగా ఒక ఆఫ్రికన్ అమెరికన్ ఆమె దగ్గరకు
వచ్చి, “ఎక్కడికి వెళుతున్నావని” అడిగాడు. ఆమె
విశ్వవిద్యాలయ ప్రాంగణంలోని విద్యార్థి వసతి గృహాలకు(హాస్టల్) వెళుతున్నానని, కానీ దారిలో మార్గం తప్పిపోయాను అని ఆమె సమాధానం
ఇచ్చింది. తనను అనుసరించాలని మరియు ఆమెను
తిరిగి విశ్వవిద్యాలయ ప్రాంగణానికి దారి చూపమని ఆమెను వెంటబెట్టుకొని సురక్షితముగా బయలుదేరినారు ఆ ఆఫ్రికన్
అమెరికన్.
మరుసటి రోజు ఆమె తన ప్రొఫెసర్లతో జరిగిన సంఘటన
గురించి చెప్పినది. కానీ వారు
నమ్మలేదు. తాము ఇప్పటివరకూ ఈ
విశ్వవిద్యాలయంలో, ఇన్ని సంవత్సరాల్లో ఎప్పుడూ ఆ ఆఫ్రికన్ అమెరికన్లు
ఇతరులకు సహాయం చేసిన సంఘటన గురించి వినలేదు,
చూడలేదు అని వారు అన్నారు.
